Runyan, Douglas

Douglas Runyan is a retired lawyer, landscape painter and art collector. Upon retirement from his law practice, Doug moved to Steuben County, Indiana, in 2018. He enjoys painting on location and in his Jimmerson Lake studio. He is known for his snow scenes, rural landscapes and paintings of schooners and commercial fishing boats from New England in pastel, gouache, oil and acrylic. Since retiring to Angola, Doug has enjoyed painting area landmarks, scenes of the local state parks, and views of the many lakes in the county.

Doug studied in workshops with national and regional instructors. He has taught painting classes for Fort Wayne Artlink, Fort Wayne Artists Guild and Steuben Arts Scene. He exhibits and sells his work at Castle Gallery in Fort Wayne, Brown County Art Gallery in Nashville, Indiana, and Folly Cove Fine Art in Rockport, Massachusetts. His work has been accepted in more than 50 national, state and regional exhibits and has received numerous awards, including from Indiana Heritage Arts, Hoosier Salon, Ventures In Creativity, Wassenberg Annual, Richmond Art Museum and others. His pastel, “When the Sun Shines”, a scene of an Amish horse team pulling a hay baler, received the Frederick Norman Vance Memorial Award from the Brown County Art Gallery in 2019.

Doug’s interest in art includes collecting, researching and writing about art history, particularly the artists of Indiana’s Brown County Art Colony and Massachusetts’ Cape Ann Art Colony. He has been guest curator for exhibits at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, Brown County Art Gallery, and Garrett Museum of Art. He has authored articles published in American Art Review, exhibit catalogs for Indiana Heritage Arts, and an essay on the Cape Ann paintings of C. Curry Bohm published in the book “C. Curry Bohm: Brown County and Beyond.” He is a board member of Steuben Arts Scene, a not-for-profit organization promoting arts and artists in Northern Indiana
